Multicultural Networking Recorded Conference Call

Dear Multicultural Networking Group members,

Thank you to those who joined our conference call with guest speaker Mary Giliberti, NAMI’s Executive Director. As she pointed out, this was just the beginning of what she hopes is an ongoing conversation.

As Mary continues to listen and identify NAMI priorities and opportunities, please keep on sharing your thoughts on how to become a more inclusive and diverse organization at all levels. We welcome your comments particularly around the 5 areas that are of special interest to her right now:

§  What NAMI is doing well to reach and attend the needs of diverse communities.

§  What NAMI needs to do or improve on this area.

§  Trends affecting diverse communities that we need to be aware of to be ahead of the curve.

§  Fundraising opportunities. Outreach and implementation partnerships.

§  Best ways to communicate with and reach your community.

Subject: MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES: Help Needed

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES:  Help Needed

NAMI has received several new requests from national reporters looking for personal stories. They want to talk with individuals or families about bad experiences with barriers or gaps in the mental health care system---and stories in which a person finally got help and what made the difference.

In general, requests involve:

·       Families
·       Children, teens or young adults
·       Veterans
·       Emergency rooms and hospitals
·       Outpatient services
·       Affordability, insurance or other funding issues
·       Criminal justice issues—particularly jails
·       Homelessness; housing
·       Employment

If you are interested in possibly sharing a story, please send a short summary to yourstory@nami.org. Please include your age, city, and state and telephone contact information.

·       NAMI may not be able to acknowledge every submission, but every story will be considered
·       Submitting a story does not commit you to being interviewed by the news media
·       Names and contact information will not be shared with any reporter until NAMI contacts you first and you give permission
·       Ultimately, it’s a reporter’s decision whether to contact a person for an interview. If an interview does not result, NAMI will still keep your story for other opportunities.

Please let us know if you are interested in telling your story to the news media. Please also forward this appeal to anyone else who might be interested.  Many thanks for your help!

Dear Multicultural Networking Group members,

Thank you to all of those who confirmed availability and provided input for our March 26 call with NAMI’s new Executive Director, Mary Giliberti.

1.     Overall strategic vision to make NAMI more diverse and inclusive.
2.     Cultural adaptation and translation of education and support group programs.
3.     NAMI's diversity and inclusion priorities.
4.     Need for additional support for multicultural leaders and efforts at the local level.

Next Steps:
·        Please submit via email questions you may have related to each of these topic areas. Note that we are looking for very concrete and specific questions related to diversity and inclusion issues. The more specific we are the better answers we can expect to receive.
·        We will share your questions with Mary in advance so that she can plan how to better address as many as possible during the call.

Agenda:
1.     Introduction and housekeeping.
