Children’s Ask the Doctor Call
Save the Date: March 21st, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. PST

Topic: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and adolescents with Pat Harvey and Britt Rathbone

Pat and Britt will be discussing DBT as it relates to adolescents and their parents. They will present a very brief overview of the modes of DBT and the DBT dialectic of Acceptance and Change. They will then discuss the philosophy behind the acceptance of problematic behaviors as a way to respond to pain as a way for parents to understand problematic behaviors in a non-judgmental, non-blaming way. They will finish up with a discussion of how parents can utilize the dialectic of acceptance and change in their interactions with teens through validation and observing limits.

Please also find the attached worksheet which will be discussed on the call.

Friday children’s conference calls with Dr. Ken Duckworth, NAMI’s medical director and a child and adolescent psychiatrist, take place on the third Friday of every month. The calls are toll free and are scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. E.T. Contact Lynn Cathy at lynn.cathy@namicalifornia.org

Message from NAMI National - 2014 F2F Curriculum

This email from National was received on Feb. 13, 2014.  It contained 3 attachments which were updates for the F2F Trainer, Teacher and participant manuals. These updates can also be obtained by going to http://nami.org/eduhelpdesk

Please see email content below:

Greetings NAMI Family-to-Family Program Directors & Coordinators:

As those of you who also work with NAMI Basics know, Teri Brister and I got so caught up in developing the NAMI Homefront program that we forgot to send you all New Year’s Cheer and information about 2014 manual updates!  Please read on for news about NAMI Family-to-Family:

Meet Suzanne Robinson
I was NAMI Ohio’s Director of Programs for 14 years prior to joining the NAMI Education team last August.  I am now Senior Education Program Manager for NAMI Family-to-Family and NAMI Homefront. I am still based in Ohio but I am happy to assist you via email or telephone.  I hope to see you at Convention in September if not sooner!

Manual Updates
The long-delayed release of the 5th Edition of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) in May of 2013, necessitated updates to more pages than we would normally have changed for 2014. Thankfully, many of the updated pages are double-sided so the task of replacing pages, although tedious, is far less expensive than replacing entire manuals. This is why the NAMI manual format remains a loose-leaf binder rather than a bound book. Barring any major updates in medication or research the next revision of NAMI Family-to-Family is not scheduled until 2016.

NAMI Store and Intranet
The 2014 versions of the manuals for all programs are now available in the NAMI Store for hardcopy purchase or as PDF downloads (trainer manuals are only available for hardcopy purchase), and you should have also gotten word that the NAMI Store has gone through an upgrade and looks different, but your coupon codes for the manuals will stay the same.

I’ve attached the PDF files of the updated 2014 pages for the Participant, Teacher and Trainer Manuals.  Please make sure that your teachers and trainers have these new page files to keep their manuals updated. The 2014 updates are also available via this link: NAMI Family-to-Family Intranet
To get access to NAMI Signature Program intranets, send an email to NAMI Education at namieducation@nami.org and include the following:
1.      Name
2.      Affiliate
3.      Role in affiliate
4.      NAMI Username
5.      Email (associated with NAMI account)
6.      Intranets Requested

Charts and Blue Card Sets – Minor Revisions Please Use What You Have!
The charts and blue cards needed for NAMI Family-to-Family are also available for purchase or download at the NAMI store.  The chart updates involve a corrected typo and the addition of logos. The revised blue cards have some minor grammatical changes and are now single-sided so that they are easier to download and copy.  It is not necessary to replace blue cards or charts unless they are worn or damaged.  Older versions of both charts and blue cards can be used in 2014 classes and trainings so there is no need to discard what you may have in stock!

Re-Orientation
The YouTube version of the re-orientation assessment is still posted online if you have people that need access to it. Let me know if you would like me to send an updated list of your state’s teachers and trainers who have completed the process.  The YouTube instructions are attached.

Please contact me if you have questions and thanks for all you do!
Suzanne
